Centered on Children: Redefining the Comfort of Learning Through Everyday Movement
1. Design Concept: Reducing the “Distance Anxiety” for Children
This project involved the comprehensive renovation of three kindergarten classrooms. Due to the original building layout, the restroom was located in the basement, forcing young children to walk through long hallways and down staircases to reach it. This inconvenient circulation not only disrupted focus during class but also caused frequent accidents when children were unable to reach the restroom in time.
The core goal of this renovation was to reintegrate plumbing systems and bring restroom facilities directly into each classroom, allowing children to use them quickly and safely. This design enables teachers to provide timely supervision and care, restoring a sense of comfort and security in the children’s daily learning environment.
2. Spatial Configuration: Efficiency and Aesthetics Through Integrated Construction
Considering the tight construction schedule and the need to maintain normal school operations, the team adopted a prefabricated integrated restroom module system. This method ensured fast installation of waterproofing, piping, wall panels, and fixtures while maintaining quality and safety standards.
The overall color palette combines light wood tones with soft gray hues, complemented by warm white lighting and natural textured tiles, creating a bright yet serene space.
Child-scaled washbasins were custom-designed to match the height and reach of preschoolers, featuring rounded edges and anti-slip flooring for added safety and comfort. Each cubicle is equipped with its own flushing and bidet system, emphasizing hygiene education and encouraging children to develop good daily habits through thoughtful design.
3. Learning Environment: Gentle Classrooms Inspired by Nature
Each of the three classrooms was designed with a unique thematic identity:
1F – Blue Sky & White Cloud Classroom:With soft blue walls and cloud-shaped panels, this classroom embodies lightness and imagination, fostering a cheerful and inspiring atmosphere for early learning.
2F & 3F – Green Canopy Classrooms:
The walls are adorned with leaf and branch-shaped acoustic panels, symbolizing growth and exploration. This forest-inspired environment creates a calm, natural atmosphere, encouraging children to grow confidently—like trees reaching toward the sky.
Beyond aesthetics, the design integrates acoustic and safety considerations. The use of formaldehyde-free, eco-friendly acoustic materials minimizes echo and noise, providing a quiet, comfortable space where children can learn and play with focus and joy.
4. Functional Planning: Custom Storage and Teaching Systems
To meet the practical needs of both teachers and students, various types of cabinetry and storage systems were custom-built:
-
Personal Shoe and Storage Lockers: Scaled to children’s height, promoting independence and organization.
-
Teaching Material and Faculty Cabinets: Modular designs for flexible use and efficient teaching preparation.
-
Overhead Cabinets with Integrated Lighting and Hidden Power Outlets: Enhancing functionality, safety, and workspace tidiness.
The design follows the principle of “seeing through the eyes of a child,” ensuring every element serves both an educational and functional purpose. Each piece of furniture is not just for storage—it becomes a subtle tool for learning, responsibility, and daily interaction.
5. Conclusion: When Space Becomes the Third Teacher
This kindergarten renovation reimagines the relationship between movement, safety, and learning through a child-centered lens. By integrating restrooms into classrooms, adopting natural design languages, and crafting thoughtful storage systems, the project creates an environment that nurtures both independence and creativity.
Through design, the everyday routines of children are transformed into moments of comfort, confidence, and discovery—proving once again that in education, space itself can be the third and most gentle teacher.
