Home Economics Is Life: Learning Through Living

Yizhu Junior High School, Chiayi County – “Light of Living Studio” Home Economics Classroom Renovation Project

Home economics is not just about cooking and sewing; it is the starting point for understanding life and experiencing culture.

Located in the rural township of Yizhu in southwestern Chiayi, Yizhu Junior High School has long been committed to helping students connect with their hometown and cultivate a sense of local identity.
Through the “Me and My Hometown” course and the “Yi Together for Service” student club, students not only learn to prepare traditional local dishes but also collaborate with community residents to develop specialty products. These efforts promote civic participation and give back to the community, gradually transforming the school into a shared learning hub within the area.

This home economics classroom renovation is a concrete response to the school’s diverse teaching practices and its close ties with the community.
The design team introduced the concept of the “Light of Living Studio”, redefining the classroom’s role as a multifunctional educational space.
It now supports not only comprehensive home economics and special education classes, but also accommodates cooking, crafts, academic subjects, civic literacy courses, and various student club activities.
Through thoughtful design, the space becomes a platform for interaction and shared learning experiences, where students gain life skills through hands-on practice and cultivate personal values rooted in real-world engagement.

Three Key Strategies: Practicing the Power of Living Education

1. Adapting to Diverse Courses – Integrated Layout for Efficient Use

This project addresses the varying needs of different types of classes—cooking, crafting, general academics, and civic literacy—ensuring that each can function independently without interference.
Electrical, digital equipment, and storage systems are integrated directly into tabletops for streamlined functionality.
Large appliances such as sinks, refrigerators, and ovens are neatly arranged along the walls, keeping the central area open and flexible.

Student and teacher desks are aligned along the long axis of the room, facilitating smooth movement and visual connection during class.
Open areas are intentionally preserved, and collapsible tables stored beneath the desktops can be easily unfolded when needed, allowing the space to scale flexibly depending on the activity.
Movable storage carts and seating support quick material distribution and post-class sharing sessions, giving the space a high degree of adaptability.

2. Digital Integration – Enhancing Demonstration and Knowledge Retention

Home economics and hands-on courses often involve practical demonstrations, where students struggle to clearly observe intricate steps during group viewing.
To resolve this, the design incorporates a document camera system that enables teachers to display detailed demonstrations in real time, allowing all students to follow along with ease.
Additionally, the teaching process can be recorded and archived as digital content, supporting future lessons and building a resource library that increases teaching flexibility and continuity.

3. Embedding Local Identity – Creating a Warm, Memorable Space

The visual and material choices for the space reflect the local landscape and cultural heritage of Yizhu Township.
Elements such as terrazzo, reclaimed wood textures, and perforated red bricks bring out a rustic, rural charm with warmth and authenticity.

At the rear of the classroom, design cues draw from the school’s emblem—blue sky, green bamboo, and white doves.
Using vertical bamboo-inspired structures and delicately crafted bird-shaped wall lamps, the space evokes a poetic scene of doves flying through a bamboo forest.
This imagery symbolizes freedom through knowledge and the extension of life, creating a deeper connection between the space and the school’s spirit, and offering students a tangible, comforting cultural memory
through daily use.
